American Reel Cross Club In Auckland

AUCKLAND. This Day. Closed on August 22 for repairs and expansion of its premises, made necessary by the increasing number of servicemen using them, the American Red Cross Club in the Hotel Auckland buildings will be re-opened on Thursday. As a result of extensive alterations earned out in the intervening period, bigger and better service will be provided. Since the opening of the club on December 5, 130,992 New Zealand servicemen and a greater number of Americans have been catered for at the restaurant and about a quarter as many at the soda fountain. In addition, orders for parties working outside and in other buildings in Auckland. as well as lor members of the various branches of the fighting forces, have been fulfilled. On February 27 overnight lodgings for servicemen were made available on the second floor of the club. This service has been used by thousands of Americans and New Zealanders. A service which was never anticipated, but has proved to be most valuable, has been the availability ol ledginss for day sleepers, who have been on night duty and found their military quarters too noisy during the day tor restful sleep. Concerts, dances and picnics have also been arranged bv the club, and, as a result ol its hospitality service, many] American officers, nurses and enlisted men have been able to pay visits to Rotorua. Numbers ol men have also been, sent on visits to private homes in the; Auckland area. ,
