“Dodged Obligations Too Long,” Fined £SO
(P.A.) NEW PLYMOUTH, This Day. Michael Kowalewski, farmer, of Waipuku, was fined £SO at Stratford yesterday on a charge of failing to report to the military authorities. The magistrate (Mr W. H. Woodward, S.M.) warned Kowalewski that if the fine was not paid it \va,uld be levied by distraint on his herd. “It is quite clear that some compulsion must be put on him without, if possible, interfering with production from his farm,” said the magistrate. “I cannot believe he has made every effort to dispose of his farm. He has escaped his military obligations long enough, but I cannot send him straight to gaol as that would ruin ills herd. - The police stated that Kowalewski, a single man, aged 30, was one of six brothers, who were all farming, and it was considered the other five could look after the farm and release him. They refused to do so because they said they had enough to do.
