Satisfactory Season For Lawn Tennis Club

“This time last year the outlook for r tennis was not over-brilliant,” said the f president of the Whapgarei Lawn Tennis ? Club (Mr. H. Jones) reporting to the < annudt meeting held in Whangarei last ; night. Taking the season all round, said Mr. Jones, the club could commend itsell on its activities, as results had been .quite i satisfactory. The issue of balls had‘been ’■ in some cases very difficult and had inconvenienced many players, but the co-operation between members had been splendid. Finances revealed that the club, although still working on an overdraft, bad paid off a substantial amount during I the year, and it seemed as if tennis balls would be made available for the coming season. The club could congratulate itself on the performance it had made during the 1 past season, said the vice-president (Mr. R. S. Finch), discussing the president’s : report. Although the membership was not very high, new meraoers would arrive when the season opened and the club’s activities commenced. Army Tennis Club’s Request Preliminary steps had been taken by Area No. 3 Headquarters to form an Army Tennis Club, available to mobilised servicemen and servicewomen of units in and adjacent to Whangarei, wrote SecondLieutenant D. Ross in a letter to the club. He requested that terms for the lease of courts should be discussed and that a committee to approach the Army Tennis Club concerning details be formed. It was decided that the club should offer a minimum of two courts to the Army Tennis Club at £2O per court for the season, and a committee comprising Messrs. L. T. Piekmere, H. Jones and R. S. Finch was appointed to handle negotiations and arrange details. It was decided to onen the club on October 23. Officers elected were: President, Mr. H. Jones; vice-president. Mr. R. S. Finch; secretary. Mr. R. Mullins; treasurer, to be appointed by committee; grounds committee. Messrs. L. T. Piekmere, H. Jones, R. S. Finch; committee. Mesdames A. Arriei!;. S. Perev, R. B. Finch, S. Tucker, Misses J. MacDonald and C. M. Stevens, and Mr. R, B. Finch; delegate to Northland Lawn Tennis Associaiion, Mr. H. Jones. ' r - .
