Mangenui Rugby
The Mangonui Rugby attraction on election day was a match between teams representing pakehas and Maoris. The Maoris won by 16 points to six. Down six points at half-time, the Maoris did not appear to have a chance, but astute leadership by veteran Heke Yates saw two tries scored in quick succession. With the lead, the Maoris outplayed the Pakehas to win handsomely. For the winners Takere scored two tries and Kukuhana and Johnson one each. Heke Yates converted two trieg. The Pakeha scores we re a try by C. Wright and a penalty goal kicked by Hoskin. Mr. N. Wilkinson was referee.
