No Australian High Commissioner To N.Z.
(Rec. 11.30 a.m.) SYDNEY, This Day
No provision is made in the Budget presented to Parliament yesterday for the establishment of tin Australian High Commissioner’s office in New Zealand, says the Canberra correspondent of the “Daily Telegraph. The New Zealand High Commissioner (Mr Berendsen) was appointed several months ago.
There has been considerable comment in Canberra at the Australian Government’s failure to reciprocate in the exchange of diplomatic representation which is usually practically simultaneous.
The new estimates, however, while providing for expenditure on all other Australian Legations abroad, make no mention of New Zealand. The Prime Minister (Mr. Curtin) said the non-appearance of the New Zealand post in the estimates was not signifi cant. Nc appointment had yet been made, so it was unnecessary to make provision for expenditure.
