MR-. F. HACKETT (Grey Lynn) Recognised as perhaps the strongest Labour seat in the Dominion, Grey Lynn has returned to its former allegiance after a contest of Dominion-wide interest, Mr. F. Hackett defeating Mr. J. A. Lee, leader of the Democratic Labour Party, who had twice scored the largest Dominion majorities for Labour. Mr. Hackett was born in England 41 years ago, and after serving in the merchant navy and in the Royal Navy during the last war, came to New Zealand in 1921. He joined the staff of the Auckland Transport Board in 1922, and since that time has been prominent in industrial activities of the Labour Party. He is chairman of the Auckland Rehabilitation Committee and secretary of the Tramway Employees’ Union. BDR. G. F. SIM, (Rotorua,) Elected as the National Party’s candidate for the' Rotorua seat, Bombardier G. F. Sim, a returned soldier from this war, who has been convalescing at the Rotorua Convalescent Hospital, has defeated the Labour candidate, Mr. A. i. Moncur. A member of an anti-tank guncrew which was struck by an enemy shell during the fighting of November, 1941, he lost his right arm, left eye, and use of his right leg. Thirty-two years of age he was educated at the Fukekohe Hign School and King’s College.

MR. F. FINDLAY (Hamilton) The new member for Hamilton, Mr. F. Findlay, is a master baker in that centre, and is a member of the Hamilton Borough Council and the Waikato Hospital Boat'd. In 1941 he topped the poll at the locaj body elections, and is now deputy Mayor.

MR. W. A. SHEAT (Patea)

Mr. W. A. Sheat, the new member for Patea, was born at Pihama in 1899 and educated at the Hawera High School and Victoria University College. At one time he was lecturer in economics for the Workers’ Educational Association, but since 1928 has been farming at Pihama. He has held many public positions and has been a prominent member of the Farmers’ Union. In 1921 he won the Union Prize as the best debater at Victoria University.

LT.-CMDR F. G. CONNOLLY (Dunedin West) Lieut.-Commander P. G. Connolly was selected to contest Dunedin West in 1941, when it was expected that an election would be held, replacing Dr. D. G. McMillan, who had retired. He was again selected for the present election. MR. E. B. CORBETT (Egmdnt) The successful candidate for Egmont. Mr. E. B. Corbett, was born at Okato 45 years ago, and enlisted for service in the Great War at the age of 19, afterwards taking up a soldier’s farm. A practical farmer, he has been a director of the Oxford Dairy Company for many years, and has been an active worker on public bodies in the Egmont electorate. MR. C. M. BOWDEN (Wellington West) Founder of a firm of Wellington accountants, Mr. C. M. Bowden was born at Dunedin in 1886, and educated at the Auckland Grammar School. He is a former president of f?ie New Zealand So ciety of Accountants, president of the Wellington Chamber of Commerce, and president of the Associated Chambers of Commerce. He is the author of pamphlets concerned with trade and finance.

CHAP.-CAPT. E. P. ADERMAN (New Plymouth) The new National Party member for New Plvmouth, Chaplain Captain E. P. Aderman, is an Australian. He served in the last war and is again serving in the armv as a chaplain. A minister of the Churst of Christ in Dunedin, he is regarded as a man of the highest humanitarian ideals.

MR. J. T. WATTS (Riccarton) A Christchurch laywer, Mr. J. T. Watts has been successful as the National Pertv’s candidate in the contest for the Riccarton seat. A young married man ..with several children, he was recently released from the armr.

MR. W. H. GILLESPIE (Httnmui) Selected to retain the Hurunui seat for th<> National Partv, for which it had been held since 1908 by the Rt. Hon. G. W. Forbes, vtao this year did not seek reelection. Mr. W. H. Gillespie is a resident of Bennett’s. North Canterbury, and is a member of .the Oxford County Council. He served in the last war and during the present, conflict has taken an active part in Home Guard work.

MR. T. R. BEATTY (Oamaru) One of the two new members to defeat a Cabinet Minister, Mr. T. R. Beatty, who has won the Oamaru seat for the National Party from the Minister for Health (Mr. Nordmeyer), was born in North Otago and worked for some years as a shepherd and farmhand. Entering the building trade, he established his own business as a contractor, and was responsible for a successful building scheme in Otago, which enabled small wage-earners to own their own homes. As a member of the National Military Reserve, he was mobilised for service, and remained in the army for many months. MR. 11. T. MORTON (Waitemata) Mr. H. T. Morton, who has been successful in winning for the National Party the Waitemata seat from the Labour candidate Mrs. M. M. Dreaver, was born in Auckland 55 years ago. He was educated at King’s College, Auckland, and at Cambridge University, England, where he gained his M. and LL.B. degrees with honours. Mr. Morton served lour years with the First N. and was wounded a.t the Somme in 1916. For many years he ha? practised as a barrister and solicitor at Te Kuiti. He has taken a keen interest in local politics and has been Mayor of Te Kuiti since 1938, and a member of the Waitomo Licensing Committee for 10 years. Since the start of this war he has been chairman of the Te Kuiti Patriotic Society. He is president of the Te Kuiti Aero Club, and is a qualified pilot. Although a resident of Te Kuiti, Mr. Morton owns property at Milford in the Waitemata electorate, and has stated his readiness to live there. MR. M. IX. ORAM (Manawatu) Mr. M. H. Oram is a barrister and solicitor of Palmerston North. He was born in Christchurch in 1885, and was educated at Wellington College and Victoria University College, graduating B.A. in 1907 and M.A. in 1909, in the latter yearwinning the Sir George Grey Scholarship. He took his LL.B. in 1912, and won the Plunket Medal, the Joynt Challenge Scroll and Union Prize for debating. After two years on the staff of Wellington College, he commenced practice in Palmerston North in 1912. where he has taken an active part in local body and High School government. He is president of the Chamber of Commerce. MR. A. E. ARMSTRONG (Napier) Son of the late Hon. H. T. Armstrong, Mr. A. E. Armstrong, who has taken the Napier seat from Mr. W. E. Barnard, who resigned from the Labour Party in 1940 to join Mr. J. A. Lee, was born at Waibi in 1902. Educated at the Marist Brothers’ School and the Christchurch Technical College, he is an electrical linesman and Diesel and mechanical engineer with considerable experience in building and con struction. From 1928 he served as a member of the lChristchurch City Council for six years, and he has been prominen! in trades union affairs. MR. R. M. ALGIE (Remuera) Mr. R. M. Algie, who has retained for the National Party the Remuera seat formerly held by Mr. W. P. Endean, over whom he was given priority, was born at Wyndham, in Southland. In 1919 he became lecturer in law at the Auckland University and when the Chair of Law was established there he became Professor of Law, holding the position until 1937. In’later years he has been actively concerned with politics, but this is his first election to the House of Representatives. MR. R. G. GERRARD (Mid-Canterbury) Mr. R. G. Gerrard, who has won the Mid-Canterbury seat for the National Party, is 32 years of age and was educated at Christ’s College. A member of the Dominion Executive of the Farmers’ Union, he is also North and Mid-<Canter-bury representative on the Meat Producers’ Board, chairman of the district primary production council, and a com-mittee-member of the Methven Agricultural and Pastoral Association.

MR. G. H. MACKLEY (Masterton) Mr. G. H. Mackley was born at Port Chalmers in. 1883 and entered the -New Zealand Railways Department in 1900 at Otautau. He was annotated eMef clerk at •"■taistchurch in 1909, stationmaster at Heriot in 1913, chief clerk at Head Office in 1928, and graduated through all branches of the service on the traffic operating side, serving as station clerk, stationmaster, and transport and train-runnmg officer, becoming assistant general manager in 1931. Two years later he made general manager, and retired in 19 5 9- During the Great War he championed the lovalty of Dalmatians in New Zealand. In 1938 he was awarded the C.M.G.
