MR. 3. G. BARCLAY Representing Marsden since 1935, the Hon. J. G. Barclay, who has lost his seat, became a Cabinet Minister in January, 1941. To his appointment as Minister for Agriculture he took a wide knowledge of farming. Born 61 years ago in Canterbury, the son of a Scottish settler, he left home to become a farm hand in the Wellington district, later farming on his own account in the Shannon district for ten years. It was in Shannon that he first became interested in politics. At the outbreak of the Great War he was in America, but returned immediately to New Zealand, sold his farm and enlisted, serving in France and with the army of occupation in Germany. Going to England on demobilisation, Mr. Barclay participated on behalf of the Labour Party in a by-election and then returned to New Zealand, managing a property at Omana until about 18 years ago when he purchased a 670acre farm in that district, becoming one of the most progressive farmers in Northern Wairoa. Twice he topped the poll in elections for the directorate of the Northern Wairoa Co-op. Dairy Co., Ltd., and also served on the North Auckland Electric-power Board, and the Kaipara Hospital Board. After coming to Whangarei he was twice appointed to the Borough Council, and for tiwo terms was a member of the Whangarei Hospital Board. He contested the Kaipara seat against the late Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates in 1928, and in 1931 the Marsden seat against Mr. A. J. Murdoch, being unsuccessful on both occasions, but in 1935 he defeated Mr. Murdoch against whom he retained his seat in 1938.

MR. A. E. PETTY The Democratic Labour candidate for Marsden (Mr. Albert Ernest Petty) who finished third among the three candidates, \vas born 56 years ago in New South Wales. Coming to New Zealand 27 years ago, he farmed a property at Feilding for 27 years ,then going into business- in Stratford. A keen bowler and chess player, Mr. Petty is married with six sons, one of whom has returned from the Middle East, one is in the Pacific zone, one on special duties within New Zealand, and two in essential services. A conference delegate and secretary of several branches of the Labour Party, Mr. Petty resigned after the expulsion of Mr. John A. Lee. He founded the Stratford branch of the Democratic Labour Party in the interests of which he was selected to contest Marsden.
