1400 Killed When Italian "Roma” Sunk
(Rec. 11.30 a.m.) LONDON, Sept. 24. Italian survivors of the battleship Roma, state that 1400 members of the crew were killed and 500 badly burned after German planes scored a direct hit on the funnel.
Tire Madrid correspondent of the Associated Press quotes survivors saying that the Roma exploded like a bomb and covered the sea with tons of blazing oil. She immediately began to sink. A cruiser and five gunboats which the Roma was escorting, stopped and picked up the survivors.
