Appeal Board Hears Engineering Cases

Appeals by the Whangarei Engineering Co. Lid., concerning If) employees Were reviewed by the No. 1 Armed Forces Appeal Beard in Whangarei today. The men concerned were Kenneth M. McLelland. panel beater, Barry W. S. Wilson, apprentice, Robert T. C. Gibson, munitions worker, Wilbur K. Durham, motor mechanic. . Walter H. Tuck, motor mechanic, Donald Brown, apprentice, Edward McG. Rcwles, panel beater, Eric J. Miller, motor mechanic, Clifford G. C. Knew, motor mechanic, Charles I. Haiti, motor mechanic, Audiey B. Griffiths, store band, Alister M. Gorrie, skilled labourer, I'ainui J. Cress, turner and machinist, Colin H. Cole, panel boater, Alexander M. Christie, motor mechanic, Leslie K. Robertson, mechanic, Lachlan G. Thomson, mechanic. Rodney H. Lecky, engineer. A volunteer for the air force. McLelland had been transferred from panel beating to munitions work, said Mr F. Reynolds in evidence, detailing the amount and nature of the work involved. Brown, Gibson and Coir, a volunteer for the air force, were other apprentices who had been transferred to munitions. The firm was not appealing in its own interests but to enable important defence contracts to be fulfilled. McLelland opposed the appeal.

Diesel Expert Tuc-k, a diesel engine fuel injector specialist, was the only employee capable of doing his type of work. The appeal was supported by Mr J. A. Fergusen, for the Navy Department. Tuck asked the board that he should be released as soon as his work was no longer essential. Robertson, who appealed on his own behalf, said he was supporting four children. Mr Reynolds said Robertson was a mechanic who also did navy repairs.

Reconditioning bearings and pistons, Wilson was fully engaged as there was a big demand for this work, especially by the army.

Released from the army, Gibson and Brown wore on munitions work. Durham was a mechanic engaged on naval work, Rowles. a volunteer fer the air force, was panel foreman and a specialist on a steelcutting machine, and Miller, provisionally accepted for the air force, Knew and Ha in were mechanics on naval work.

Griffiths was engaged in handling spare parts, and could be replaced by the storeman if he were released from the army. Gorries was most useful in fitting and turning cn essential work. Cross was the only turner employed, Christie, a volunteer for the air force, was a mechanic engaged principally on commercial work, and Thomson was in charge of the hardening furnace and did radiator and motor repairs, while Lecky did naval work as well as general welding and boiler work. All the appeals were adjourned sine die except that for McLelland. which was dismissed subject to his not being called before January 1. Three Properties

Mr M. Srhoj appealed for Andrew .Srhoj and Miljenko Srhoj, farm hands, of Waiharara. Both reservists were single and with a brother, unfit for military service, wore farming' three properties of 127 acres. 217 acres and 371 acres. On the 127 acre farm production last season had been 16,000 lbs butterfat from 70 cows, while on the second property it had been 1.9,200 lbs butierfal from 124 cows. Staving decreased due to dry weather and labour shortage. The third property was used as a run-off. Pig's itad also been produced. Prior to the war two other labourers had been employed but the three brothers were now doing all the work. Both appeals were adjourned sine die. The appeal of John N. Matijeviclt (Mr Rossi was supported by his father, Mr K. Matijeviclt. On the farm of 110 acres at Waiharara GO cows had been milked last season for a production of 10,200 lbs butterl'ai while pigs had also been raised A single man. be was doing the farm work, while a brother was gum-digging. Whimp. Mr Whimp staling that the position in the factory had become progressively worse and reservist was the foreman and the only employee capable of doing welding and wheelwrighting. A quarry owner, William Whitelaw, of Kamo, said he was working a deposit, of iron ore. most of the supply going to Portland while the remainder went to CVvmical and Colour Industries (N.2.) Ltd., which lodged the appeal. Withdrawn from the Independent Mounted Rifles, Gordon H. S. Wilson, farmer, of Parua Bay, said that on his property of 193 acres 36 cows last season had returned 7200 lbs butterfat. while pigs also had been raised. Noel A. Wilson (Mr Thomson) said he had a farm of 600 acres at Parakao and was running a dairy herd, dry stock, pigs and sheep. Dairy production last, season had been 8300 lbs from 54 cows. Farming 122 acres at Foroti, Claude A. R. Wat kin said that last season his herd of 31 cows had yielded 6COO lbs butterfat, while he had raised pigs and calves. Convicted Reservist Mr F. E. Crawford appealed for James Yakas, sharemilker, of Tangowahine, who was stated to have been convicted for failing to register and had been called up by special gazette. Mr Crawford said he was mixed farming on 1927 acres and had three sharemilkers. Yakas had milked 160 cows last season for a return of 32.CCC lbs butterfat. Yakas had claimed lo have filled in the necessary registration papers which must have become mislaid. No replacement for Yakas had been sought, but he would try to do so at the end of the season.

Released from the Independent Mounted Rifles. Bon.i'amin J. Yates said hi' was farming 870 acres at Whananaki and lastseason 3 Pj cows had yielded 4500 lbs butterl'at while In' had also boon running other slock. Melvin A. Young (Mr Rishworlh) said he was farming 80 acres at: Kamo and lasr season production had been 7000!bs butterfat. from 32 cows, a reduction from 9200 lbs the previous season due to his having been in camp and ro the dry season. Pigs had been raised. The Whangaroi Timber Co. Ltd.. _ appealed for Walter J. Wilton, truck-driver, the secretary (Mr F. Primmer) stating that reservist was the only driver employed and was a particularly capable man in carting timber. To replace him would be most difficult. The following appeal was dismissed subject to service not being required before October I: E. Sot hern and Co. Ltd., appealed for Harold H. Waymouth, milk factory hand and truck driver, Mr Sot-hern stating that he only required a postponement: of service to enable another employee to return to work.
