Appeals By Farmers Under Review

Principally cases of reservists concerned with farming operations came before the No. 1 Armed Forces Appeal Board in Whangarei today. The board comprises Messrs W. Jones (chairman). N. Horrobin. A. Tremaine appealed for Charles Albert Ward, sharemilker at Ruatangata, slating that last season on the property of 19:) acres 00 cows had been milked for a return of 15,5001b5. butterfat. An appeal was made by Mr. F. G. Long (Mr. Lamb) for George A. Snell, sharemilker. of Whakapara. Last season 7)1 cows had given a return of 17,7001b5. butterfat. while on the property of 400 acres pigs had also been raised.

Storrar said that three properties of 900 acres were being farmed and, in addition to raising cattle, sheep and pigs, a herd of 82 cows and heifers last season had yielded ll.OOOlbs. butterfat, as well as whole milk. Storrar was her only assistance.

With a farm of 57 Va acres at Poroli. Walter J. Snell said that last season he had milked 25 cows for a production of OSOGlbs. and he had raised his calves as well as pig's. Charles G. Stifle told the board that he was farming 302 acres a 1 Aponga, production from 32 cows last season being 00001 bs. buttcrlat, while pigs and lambs had been sold, and sheep and cattle were carried. A butcher of Kamo, Ernest S. Smith (Mr. Thomson), married, with four children. detailed the operations of his business and delivery of meat and bread. The board reviewed appeals by Whangarei Transport Ltd. (Mr.. Ross) for Arthur T. Courtney, Hugh Ferguson, Gordon R. Green, Allan J. J. McDonald, A. Muggcridge and Cyril Roughton, drivers, and William L. Sirl, manager, all Grade I. men. The company was operating 1G vehicles in general carrying and transport, including muon ol the work for the Public Works Department, and owing to difficulties in keeping vehicles on the road competent experienced drivers were necessary. Medical grading of some of the men was disputed.
