Vivid Lecture, Films In Palestine, Syria
The Whangarei Methodist school hull was packed last evening when a particularly interesting and educative lecture. Followed by the screening of two cinematograph films. "Palestine” and ‘‘Syria, was given. The lecturer ißev. F. Gardner brown) dealt with the lite of the people in town and country, and said that Palestine was a wonderful farming country, definitely most charming' in springtime. Rev. Brown graphically described the towns oi Nazareth. ’ Tiberius and Capernaum .and gave vivid accounts of some of lite historic beauty spots. No compulsory education system existed, resulting in the children of Palestine commencing work at a very early age. and in one garage Mr. Brown visited, a boy of 14 years was foreman over tully matured men. The women always carried the water pots, as it was the most humiliating of till tasks for the menfolk. Work of New Zealanders
Of particular interest were lite films, especially so when scenes were shown of a large hospital, under the care of Dr. Barthgato ‘(formerly of IVTosgiei), who, said the lecturer, was doing a very line work based upon purely Christian ideals. Scenes of placer, of interest that have become so well known in New Zealand flashed across the silver sheet as Rev. Brown added a verbal commentary. Beirut. well known to many New Zealand soldiers, was shown very clearly, and Mr. Brown mentioned the great work that the Nairn brothers, also formerly of New Zealand, were doing there.
At the conclusion of the two films, thanks was expressed by Mr. T. Palmer, who said that, as a professional photographer, he hud no hesitation in saying that the lilms were of an exceptionally high standard.
