Brilliant “Good-Bye Mr. Chips” At Plaza
Mailed by critics throughout the world as a masterpiece of histrionic art and welcomed by theatre-goers as superlative entertainment, “Good-bye Mr. Chins’’ is again being screened at the Plaza Theatre and last night’s audience included many wlio had previously seen and enjoyed immeasurably a notable film. When James Hilton’s simple story first appeared it was regarded as a modern classic and the film has faithfully followed the book, but it has all the advantages of pictorial presentation. It is a simple story, that of a shy young schoolmaster to whom comes romance, and marriage to a woman who influences his life and brings him the friendship of his boys, something which had previously been denied him, so that after the tragedy of her death he goes on to become the dean of all masters who ever served an English public school. Robert Donat gives a" magnificent performance throughout the 63 years of the stcry, while Greer Garson reveals that brilliance which won for her the principal role in “Mrs. Miniver.” An exceptionally fine “March of Time” dealing with the Free French movement and traversing the period from France's fall until the present time, when under General de Gaulle the Fighting French arc playing a big part in the war, is also screened.
