Mysterious Deaths Of High-Placed Nazis
LONDON. August 21, Deaths of two German officers announced recently are surrounded by a certain amount of mystery. The Berne correspondent of the Stockholm “Allehanda” says Major-General Chamiers Glisezenski, inventor of many of Germany’s so-called secret weapons, was found dead after an R.A.F. raid on Peenemunde, with a bullet wound in the back. Himmler has ordered an inquiry into the deaths, also an investigation of how the R.A.F. learned the secret of Peenemimde’s production, and whether it was betrayed by spies or saboteurs.
The other officer was ColonelGeneral Hans Jeschonek, chief of the general staff of the Luftwaffe, iwho, according to Berlin radio, died from severe illness on Thursday. The National Broadcasting Company picked up a Berlin radio commentator who said that recent events have chastened extremists in Germany and, by their very seriousness, might make a just peace more acceptable to the German people. He added that this does not mean unconditional surrender. Able and fair-minded statesmen could draft a reasonable, just and honest peace.
