Hargest Keeps Eyes Open In Switzerland
(Special) LGNDCN, August 22. Brigadier-General Hargest. writing to a friend from Berne, states: "We- are well but the prospects for an immediate homecoming' are not good. We have plenty of eveiything here but living is appallingly clear. Clothes and food seem the dearest items, but they manage their economy so there is no shortage.
For some years before the war, every household was ordered to lay in stores and this is bearing fruit today. "I am greatly interested in farming here which, while dill'erent trom ours is basically much the same. I visited lots ot farms, dairy factories and sawmills and for three weens, worked with an old peasant tanner, getting in his hav. Tnoy arc good farmers,, careful, industrious and clean and 1 learned a good deal from my man, despite language difficulties. Everyone woi ks hard for long hours. That is where they beat us. New Zealand will need to adopt new ideals if we are to keep up in the race."
