Mr. Thos. W. Baker
Well-known in the Kaitaia district, where he had lived for the past 21 years, Mr. Thomas Baker died at the kawakawa hospital cm August 1(! after a short illness. He was buried at Rawene the following day. Born in London in 1870. he crime to New Zealand at the age of 12, and pioneered in the Hokianga disWiet. in his early days lie spent a short time on the Hokianga Heads lighthouse, and also became well-known for his sculling ability. As a nurseryman, he served his time with the well-known Warkwcrth "Red Bluff" nurseries of the Morrison Brothers. An expert on native trees and plants, Mr. Baker was also an excellent Maori linguist. He leaves a widow, five sons and three daughters.
