Italians Seek Armistice With Allied Powers
(Received 11.30 a.m.) LONDON, August 20. AN ITALIAN DIPLOMATIC MISSION HAS BEGUN NEGOn TIATICNS WITH THE ALLIES FOR AN ARMISTICE. High-ranking Italian officers in telling this to Swiss correspondents added that the Vatican was largely instrumental in despatching the mission which reached Lisbon on Wednesday. The “Daily Mail’s” correspondent on the Swiss frontier says it is believed that Badoglio already may have given the order to surrender, but the news may not be released for several days. A high Italian military authority said: “The Italian people are aware that peace terms will be hard, just as they are aware that systematic destruction of Italy’s big industrial cities by the R.A.F. will continue unless the terms are accepted.”
