Hearing Of Freezing Company Appeals

Appeals by the Auckland Farmers’ Freezing Co.. Ltd., Moerewa, were heard by the No. 1 Armed Forces Appeal Board which held a single day sitting in Whangarei today. The board comprised Messrs. R. Coates (chairman), A. J. Magee, N. Horrobin and R. Gray (secretary). The company appealed for Albert E. F. Williams, tallow hand, Wynne L. Urwin. board walker, Edward I. Penney, chainslaughterman, Alfred J. Dodds, beef, mutton, pig and calf slaughterman, Laurence Brown, grader and weigh clerk, Joyce Dixon, mutton, pig and calf slaughterman, Leslie Clapperton, slaughterman, Robert H. Berghan. butcher, and Thomas Young, electrician, all Grade I. men. The manager (Mr. J. W. Law) said that the appeal ior Berghan had been lodged by the Director of National Service, but he had been in the air fotcc for some months. The Auckland Utilisation Committee supported all the appeals except those for Williams and Penney, and the board expressed the opinion that the details of the committee’s survey of the manpower position at the works should be made available. The appeal for Berghan, was dismissed and in all the other appeals decision was reserved pending receipt of the utilisation committee’s report. Appeal Opposed Messrs. Smith and Woodman. Whangarei (Mr. D. J. Thomson), appealed for David McK. Spence, engineer apprentice, an Air Training Corps cadet, Mr. T. E. Woodman giving evidence that the present staff' was insufficient to cope with the work. The appeal was opposed by Spence, for whom Mr. A. L. Steadman stated that the need of the air force was greater than that of a private individual. The appeal was adjourned sine die. Edmond P. Trigg, truck-driver, of Whangarei (Mr. Thomson), said that an appeal had been made for him by the Public Works Department and had first been adjourned sine die, later being withdrawn. Now appealing on his own behalf, he said he was engaged in well-boring and was also wanted by the department for bridgeboring'. Sine die adjournment was granted. A farmer of Otaika Road, Whangarei. William A. Johnson (Mr. Thomson) said he had been in camp, but had been withdrawn on his wife’s application. He was conducting a farm which last season had produced CCOOibs. butterfat and this season he had 30 cows to milk. He considered he was not Grade 1., but had not been medically reboarded, and lie was advised 10 make an application for a re-board. Decision was reserved.

Appearing for the Whangarei Borough Council in its appeal for Eric R. Stninton, accountant. Mr. Thomson said Stainton had a most important position in handling borough finances and in supervising staff work. A most capable man, there had not been an audit tag on the balance-sheet since he had taken over the position of accountant, and he was accounting for the patriotic fund and the Emergency Precautions Service. Sine die adjournment was granted.
