On Thursday afternoon the Women’s Institute held the usual 500 tournament for W.l, funds. Opportunity was taken to farewell Mrs L. McLean (the recent Air Force Mother), who is leaving 1 Foriianil to reside in Auckland. Mrs Lindsay, on behalf of the residents, presented Mrs McLean with an oval hanging mirror, and Master Mervyn McLean with a small gift. Site expressed regret at Mrs Melean’s departure and wished her and her family every success in Auckland. Mrs Wood's and Miss S. Woods were visitors from Whangarei. Mrs. McLean suitably replied. Toe winners of tiie tournament wore Mrs Conlan and Mrs R. Wilson. Mr and Mrs G. Peters have returned from their slay with Mrs Peters’ mother, Mrs S. Batson, at Mission Bay. Auckland. Mrs F. Gower and Miss A. Gower have returned from a visit to Auckland. A meeting of residents of Portland was held in the hall on July 22 to discuss the forming of a committee to deal with functions of welcome to returning men from overseas. A welcome dance will be held in tiie near future. The following committee was formed: Chairman. Mr A. G. Whit ham: secretary A. Hickman: committee, Mesdames Blake. Schofield. Anderson, Powell, Grant. Lupton. Lindsay and Harris, Mesrs I). Grant. J. Powell. G. Harris, R. G. McLaren. H. Williams and S. Williams.
Mrs A. Anderson, who is the Portland Women's institute's delegate to the Dominion conference to- he hole! in Gis-bo-ia left on Monday. Mrs. Stailoring; and Mrs. Conlan have gone to the conference and will then make an extended holiday in the Gisborne and Tf.-iwkes Bay district.*:. Mr. and Mrs. l-l. Duran. late of Suva, are staying with Mr. and Mrs. Neal, of Portland.
.-V very happy function took place in the Portland hall on Friday evening, m the form of a kitchen evening, in honour of Miss Gwen Boyd, whose marriage to Dr. McNamara takes place this week. The hall was crowded with friends and relatives and tiie array of beautiful gifts testified to their popularity. The music was snplied by Fes Wright’s orchestra. The Monte Carlo was won by Miss Blake and partner. Extras for the dance were played by Mr. R. Ferguson on the bagpipe. The spot waltz was won by Mrs. Bennett and partner. Shortly after supper. Mr. D. Grant introduced Mr. A. C. Whitham to (he gathering. In a happy speech, Mr. Whitlinm asked Miss Boyd to accept tiie fine a ray of gifts on display from the residents of Portland. Ur. MeNamat'a suitably replied. Musical honours were accorded the happy pair.
