Hukerenui Welcomes Returned Men
An energetic committee had matters well in hand at Hukerenui when it was known that soldiers were returning from the Middle East and the local Home Guard company provided a guard of honour. Nhxt-of-kin and returned men were escorted to the stage by the returned soldiers of the First World War. This function took place in the Hukerenui. Hall last Wednesday within 24 hours of the men’s arrival. Mr J. Rouse, chairman of the Hukerenui Patriotic Committee, and Mr PI. W. Rusk, a member of the executive of the Bay of Islands R.S.A., gave addresses of welcome. Other speakers were Mr W. Sheehan, of Tapuhi, who spoke on behalf of residents of Tapuhi, and Mr R. G. Phvn, who spoke on behalf of the residents of Riponui. The returned men each suitably replied, and the audience of about 300 people joined heartily in singing “For they are jolly good fellows.” The remainder of the evening was taken up by dancing to music provided by voluntary musicians, Mr A. L. Thomassen (piano accordion) and Mrs Phyn (piano).
