Navy invites applications for entry as follows. Requirements arc—■ SIGNALMEN Age 171-30. High standard of intelligence, elementary knowledge of Morse and Semaphore. SEAMEN (RADAR) —Age 171-30. To operate Radio Direction finding apparatus. Men of intelligence and good physique for this interesting work. TELEGRAPHISTS—Age 171-30. Previous experience of Morse Key preferred, otherwise candidates should at cnee acquire all the knowledge they can. 12 words a minute each way for entry. ABLE SEAMEN—(I) FOR HARBOUR DEFENCE— Age 30-45. Men of intelligence and good character for defence of harbours and ports in and round New Zealand, although candidates must be prepared for service anywhere within their category of physical fitness. Slight mechanical or electrical knowledge an advantage but not essential. (2) FOR GENERAL DUTIES —Age 30-15. Routine duties in various Naval Bases and Establishments in New Zealand. An opportunity for older men of no special qualifications to serve in this war bv releasing younger men for overseas. (3) DEFENSIVELY EQUIPPED MERCHANT SHIPS—Age 25-45. Previous sea service an advantage but not essential. Ratings are engaged in manning and maintenance of the armament and help to instruct the gun’s crew. Duties may take them to any part of the world. Applications from married men with not more Ihan three children. There is no more important work than protection of our sea-borne trade. ENGINE ROOM MECHANICS (SHORE SERVICE ONLY) Tradesmen, who should be Fitters or Fitters and Turners with considerable workshop experience to man Base Repair Shops. Applicants are limited to men debarred from Sea Service on grounds of family or of age, or. in some cases, on medical grounds. Men over 40 may apply or younger men with two or more children. Conditions of service and pay as for Motor Mechanics. An opportunity for men otherwise debarred for general service to do important work in the Navy. MOTOR MECHANICS—Age 18-45. Fully qualified Motor Engineers receive preference, but candidates with allied trade experience also considered. RADIO MECHANICS —Age 18-35. A limited number of trained men qualified in the radio trade or with considerable theoretical and practical knowledge can be accepted. In all the above except where otherwise stated applications from married men with more than cne child cannot be accepted.
