Britain Seeks Increased Butter Shipments
(P.A.) WELLINGTON, This Day. In an interview today the Minister for Agriculture (Mr. Barclay) said that at the National Dairy Conference held at Palmerston North, on June 23. he had indicated his willingness, if the conference concurred, to recommend the Government to have the Dairy Supply Control Crder of 1942 revoked. However, since the date of the conference, said the Minister, cables had been received from the British Ministry for Food indicating that at least 115,003 tons of New Zealand butter should be forwarded to Britain during the season and this and other requirements made it necessary to avoid any change-over from butter to cheese, although the United Kingdom desired all the cheese New Zealand could supply in addition to butter. The Government, therefore, decided that it would be advisable at present to revoke the control order. This meant that dairy farmers who supplied cream for butter manufacture last season should continue to supply such cream for butter during the present season rather than change over to supply of milk for cheese.
