Widow And Four Children Drowned
(P.A.) INVERCARGILL, Sunday. A drowning tragedy in which a widow and four of her six young children are believed to have lost their lives, occurred in the Waihopai River, on the outskirts of Invercargill last night. The victims are:— Mrs. Emma, Mcßae Atkinson Robertson, aged 37, mother of the children. James Robertson, aged five years. Struan Robertson, aged four years. Nan Robertson, aged three years. Graham Robertson, aged two years. Mrs. Robertson’s husband, Mr. James Robertson, died 10 months ago. According to the police, Mrs. Robertson early on Saturday evening, took the children for a walk to a nearby bridge and dropped each child into the rivc-r, after which she jumped into the river. The eldest child, Joan Robertson, aged 7, and one of the twin boys, Alister Robertson,, aged 4, were able to scramble ashore. The others sank immediately or were carried downstream by the fast-running current of the flooded river. ...... The .police recovered the bodies of the .mother and Struan by dragging tc dli ', ■ !
