GM Clerk Tells Remarkable Story

(P.A.) AUCKLAND, Monday. A remarkable story was told before two J.P.s in the Police Court today by a young woman, when George William Hancock, 29, carpenter, appeared on a number of charges. It. was alleged that he obtained from a young Iwoman with intent to defraud, £l6O on May 25, and £BO on June 2, by falsely representing that he was George William Cameron, single, and .was drummajor in the Queen’s Own Cameron Regiment, having £2OO due to him from the regiment as back pay, and £BOO superannuation to his credit. There was also a charge of theft from a dwelling of goods valued at £54/6/-, and of theft of a cheque for £4B/16/-. Complainant, who said she was a clerk employed by a city firm, stated that she frequently acted as hostess at the Second N.Z.E.F. clubrooms, where she met accused, who tcld her his name was Cameron, of the Queen's Own Camerons, and he was in New Zealand for ten iweeks with his regiment for a rest after fighting for three years. Accused spoke with a slightly Scotch accent. Complainant met him almost daily, and on his representations gave, him the money which was the subject of the charges, and he purchased a car. He then left for Palmerston North, saying that ho intended to resign from his regiment. He told her he wanted to marry .her, but she said that she Iwanted six months to think it over. * The police stated that accused had been living at Hamilton for three years and was the father of three young children. Accused pleaded not guilty and was committed for trial.
