Voters’ Challenge To Social Reform
LONDON, April S. Warrant-Officer John Loverseed, who won the Ertdisbury by-election, is in his early thirties. He is the first membei of the Commonwealth Party to win a seat. W.O. Loverseed was a pilot in the battle for Britain, lie (lew in Spain on the Republican side. His election slogan was that every vote for him was a vote for the Beveridge report. lie advocates national ownership of land, coal, electricity, transport, and the iron and steel industries. Formed last July, the Commonwealth Party has contested five by-elections. "The Times” in a leading article says:
"Warrant-Officer Loverseed is a gallant, earnest, sincere young man, with a simple, direct programme. He put winning the war before all else, yet claimed priority for a policy of social progress, a policy with a positive appeal which won the day.
“Warrant-Officer Loverseed's victory is not a vote hostile to tile Prime Minister, who is completely identified with active prosecution of the war. but rather a call which cannot safely he neglected for prompt, unequivocal measures to give effect to the great programme of social reform embodied in (he series of reports
