Gallant Fight To Save Burning Freighter

For seven hours the British corvette Lavender lay alongside a blazing Panamanian freighter while the corvettes’ crew fought and extinguished the fire. The cargo had been on fire for tsvo days in the Caribbean and when the corvette arrived the bridge and superstructure were already gutted. While the corvette’s crew shifted depth charges and ammunition below decks to safer positions, Commander J. Whayman, then in command of the Lavender, brought his ship alongside the blazing freighter* The fire was gradually extinguished and the freighter towed by tugs to harbour. For this daring exploit Commander Whayman, together with four others of the corvette’s personnel, have been mentioned in despatches.
