OBITUARY
Mr. George Cates
The death has occurred at Dargaville cf Mr. George Cates, senior, well known by the pioneers of this district. He was born at Cates’ Hill, a few miles out of Blenheim, 81 years ago, and attended the school in that town. For some years he and a brother carried out agricultural work in the Blenheim district.
In 1888 he married Miss Harriet Elizabeth Smith, of Blenheim. The late Mr. Cates worked for some time at the Blenheim gasworks, until he was ordered to the north because of illhealth.
The Cates family took up residence in Aoroa in the first year of operation of the Northern Wairoa Dairy Co.. Ltd. A farm of 112 acres was bought on what is still known as Cates’ Road. There he farmed for a number of years and retired in 1920, taking up residence in Te Kopuru. Before that he had been engaged at different times at the Aoroa timber mills and in the brick-laying trade.
Mr. Cates was predeceased by his wife two years ago. and is survived by five sons, four daughters and 29 grandchildren.
