Support Generating Station For Northland

The necessity for the provision of a generating station in the North, and the duplication of the main Government transmission line from Henderson through Northland were brought before the North Auckland Electricpower Board yesterday by the Waitemata Electric-power Board. It was pointed out in the letter that the present single line was altogether inadequate for future requirements, and that the provision of a generating station capable of supplying the power requirements of all areas north of Auckland City was essential. “We consider that Northland will undoubtedly become one of the most closely settled and populous areas (>fler the war,” the letter stated. Facilities Near Whangarei

Mr J. N. McCarroll expressed the opinion that the matter was not new. The North Auckland Board had previously asked the Government to duplicate the line. There was plenty of water near Whangarei to provide the necessary power for the generating station.

Mr E. G. Appleton considered the Waitemata Power Board should be thanked for again bringing the matter forward. The need for taking action was greater than ever.

Mr W. Collins considered particular attention should be paid to the provision- of a generating station in the North. An up-to-date coal burning plant at Hikurangi; or a modern Diesel plant near Whangarei should meet he position. Support should be given to any. suggestion which would encourage local industry. A second line was oniy one necessity, as two lines running neas. each other might be affected simultaneously. Mr Rodney Coates supported the Waitemata Power Board. The chairman (Mr J. A. McLean) considered the matter should be put in hand as soon as men and material were available. He moved that support be given to the recommendations made by the Waitemata Power Board, and this was carried unanimously.
