Mr. Harry Chatwin

The death has occurred in Whangarei of Mr Harry Chatwin, who was born in Birmingham in 1868. He came to New Zealand in the ship Agnes Muir and landed on Christmas Eve, 1872. He joined the staff of the ‘‘Auckland 'Star" as a lithographer in 1883, a position he held for 26 years, leaving to I take up a position as manager of Harvey and Son, tin printers, Auckland. [Some years later he became manager of the Union Can Company, in Melbourne, Australia.

For 53 years he was a member of I the American Order of Oddfellows. ! Illuminated addresses for distinguished membership were presented ito him by the Ellerslie Bowling Club [and the Ellerslie School Committee. ; Mr Chatwin was a well-known [ 'comedian and realised some thousands, !of pounds from concerts for widowsj [and orphans and any deserving cases, [both in Australia and New Zealand j [when there was no help for the poor] [and needy. He started as a comic [singer at the age of 16 and at the age of 75 was giving a long arm turn in [ "Marching Feet" at the Whangarei Town Hall where he made thousands j laugh. Mr Chatwin is survived by his wifej and three daughters and three grand- 1 children. His only son was killed in! the last war.
