Bicyclist Dies Of Injuries After Awanui Accident

(Special) KAITAIA, This Day. A fatal accident occurred on. the Awanui road, a mile south of the post office, last evening, when, as a result of being knocked over by an army truck, a girl received fatal injuries. She was Melva Ridings, aged 16, daughter of Mr and Mrs W. J. Ridings, Te Rore. Miss Ridings and a friend, Miss Jean Brydon, of Diggers’ Valley, were cycling to a dance at Awanui. The lights of three oncoming cars dazzled the driver of the military truck travelling in the same direction as the girls and prevented him from seeing them until nearly upon them. Because of the oncoming traffic he could not swerve but stopped immediately after the accident.

He found both girls on the grass at the side of the road, it being obvious that Miss Ridings was seriously injured. Dr. W. McKechnie, who was travelling in the vicinity, was soon on the scene and ordered their removal to hospital, where Miss Ridings died at 10.55 p.m. The condition of the other girl is reported this morning to be satisfactory and improving. Formal evidence of identification was given before the coroner (Mr. L. A. Mclntosh) this morning, and the inquest was adjourned.
