(Received 11 a.m.) WASHINGTON, Dec. 17
The War Department is prepared to equip an army of 7.500,000, the Undersecretary fo r War (Mr Patterson) told a Senate Committee investigating the war programme. Responding to Senator Brewster’s question, Mr Patterson said that such a. large army could be raised without disrupting civilian life too much. He added that the army will require 25.000,000,000 dollars’ worth ol eauipment compared with 5,000,000,000 *in 1942. Redistributing Doctors
The army and navy are calling up 11.500 physicians in 1943, leaving 80,000 to attend the civilian population which is a ratio of one doctor to every 1500 citizens. This was revealed at a meeting of the Senate Sub-Committee investigating the shortage of doctors. Evidence was given advocating compulsory redistribution of doctois from over-supplied areas to regions suffering from shortage. The United States Army now totals 5,000,000 according to the United States War Secretary (Mr. Patterson). Military supplies acquired for the army during 1942 are valued at 25,000,000,000 dollars.
