(Received 1.30 p.m.) LONDON, December 16,
Berlin radio has announced that the R.A.F. forced three Italian battleships, including the Roma and Vittorio Veneto, to leave Naples to seek shelter at Toulon. R.A.F. heavy bombers raided Naples on Monday night dropping explosive and incendiary bombs on important military objectives. Many large fires were started and huge clouds of smoke rose from oil storage depots which received direct hits. Heavy bombe/s plastered the harbour and main power station in the shipyard area. Other bombs fell near a railway station in the centre of Naples and marshalling yards between the Royal Arsenal storage depot. Hits were also scored on steel-works at Bagnoli, south-west of Naples. An Italian communique does not mention the damage, but /ays that there (were no civilian casualties.
A Cairo message says a large -fire which broke out east of the storage depots could be seen for 30 miles. Other bombs fell on the main fire station control, railway station and marshalling yards. Bombs also burst in the oil storage depot and Royal Naval yards. A raid was also carried out on Bangoli steel works, south-west of the main target with great success.
