Tribute To Inspector
At the Whangarei High School end of year function yesterday the principal (Mr A. R. Ryder) extended a welcome to the assistant senior inspector of schools (Mr A. F. D. East). Mr East, stated Mr Ryder, had been of great assistance to the schools of Northland, and his encouraging, enlightening influence had appealed to all. He would leave the district as a friend of pupil and teacher. Replying, Mr East, said he had witnessed a great change in education in his lifetime. He had seen a growing understanding between parents and the staff; Today the method was to bring the curriculum to the child and not the child to the curriculum. What was learnt at. school affected the child’s career and it was all-important that, the school life should be made a pleasant one. Mr East spoke of the value of beginning the school day properly. The opening ceremony at the Whangarei High School had made a lasting impression on him and. he knew, on the children.
