As an ex-teacher and mother, I should like to renly to Mary Spedding regarding teachers and schoolchildren. First, the wel-
of our
nation
TEACHERS AND depends on the phySCHOOLCIIILDREN steal and mental fit-
ness of the children, so we must see that their health and education are the best that we are able to give them. So rnanv of our teachers ate serving in Libya and other places that an extra strain is thrown on those who remain, and I, for one, think they earn their salary. What difference does _it make if a teacher has £2(10 a year with 10 weeks' holiday on full pay, or £O/4/per week for 42 weeks and no pay for the holidays? In any case, the teacher seldom earns more than a labourer, and has to spend eight years or more studying to quality for his position. If Mrs. Speclding made inquiries. I am sure she would be surprised at the number of teachers who are working this January, helping their parents, leaching summer schools, lecturing or coaching soldiers, and many other necessary and useful occupations.
As l'or sending children to school all the year, well. I consider that it would be very detrimental to their health, mental and physical. Children must have time to give their minds and bodies rest and recreation. Besides, the parents usually wish to train, and have the company and assistance of, their children sometimes.— "FARMER'S WIFE.”
