Maungakararaea
The fortnightly social Vas hold on Saturday evening. The usual cards, games and a few dances were enjoyed. These evenings are keenly looked forward to and a hearty invitation is extended to ail. The card winners were Mrs W. Smith (ladies), Mr F. O’Shea (gents). A calf donated by Mr F. Litt was won by Mr T. O’Carroll, senr.
The market garden owned by Mr Peterson is now yielding handsomely, and many pickers have been busy at the large crop of green peas and other vegetables so much in demand these days. Mr Peterson is congratulated on his fine effort. Many ’Karameaiios motored, rode or cycled to the Tangiteroria patriotic carnival last Saturday. The carnival was a great success, and the cause of “our boys” benefited considerably. W.C.T.U. The annual meeting* of the W.C.T.U. was held on November 18. The president, Mrs Weir, opened the meeting with orayer and read the devotions. Officers were elected as follows: President, Mrs Weir (re-elected); secretary, Mrs S. Purdon (re-elected); Maori superintendent, Mrs Harvey; evangelist. Mrs Gillingham; treasurer, Miss H. Walker; temperance agent, Mrs A. Babe; White Ribbon reporter. Mrs Gillingham. All reports wore encouraging, and it. was shown that; the year's work had been highly satisfactory. Several choruses were sung, and afternoon tea was provided by Mrs Gillingham. Personal Sergeant-Major ,S. W. Crawford spent a few days' leave at his home. Mr and Mrs Woodcock have returned from Auckland, where they spent a short holiday. Mr and Mrs T. Wells, and son, of Maungatapere, have purchased tin* farm of Mr K. Woodcock. They are welcomed to the district.
