Thrilling Story Of Axis Plot At Regent

AMUSEMENTS

In such films as “Lives of a Bengal Lancer” and “Four Feathers” cinematic tribute was paid to the legions of men who have helped in the past to hold the bastions of Empire. Paralleluig these historic films but with attention to the brave men who are frustrating the machinations of the Axis powers among the natives in Africa at the present time, is “Sundown” a finely acted, superbly cast and stirringly dramatic film which opened at the Regent Theatre last evening before a capacity attendance. Located in isolated Kenya Colony, the story deals with enemy attempts to rouse the natives against Britain and the small band of representatives governing thousands of tribesmen to whom are being smuggled arms for an uprising. The picture breaks new ground in depicting the outcome of the attempts of enemy agents to break Britain’s hold on her strategic stronghold in Africa and maintains an exciting pace until a telling climax in the metropolis of London. Gene Tierney heads the cast as a mvsterious half-caste girl. Bruce Cabot is 'the heroic commissioner, George Sanders, the military-tradition-steeped Governor’s aide and Ralph Gardiner the commissioner’s assistant, while Carl Esmond is the sinister enemy agent. It is Joseph Calleia, however, who nearly sreals the show with a fine performance as an Italian patriot, a prisoner of war.
