Kaikohe Sportsman Killed In Middle East Accident

Mr and Mrs S. G. Robinson, of Kaikohe, have been notified by the Minister for Defence that their son Ted, aged 24, has died while on active service in the Middle East as a result of a motor accident. Notification of his death came as a sudden and tragic blow to his parents and sister, Miss June Robinson, as well as an exceptionally large circle of friends. Born at Eltham, Taranaki, Ted was educated at the Stratford Technical High School, where he first showed himself to be a keen sportsman. He | took a great interest, while in TaraI naki, in hockey, swimming and football. Ccming to Kaikohe, just on nine years ago, he was employed at the North " Auckland Formers’ Co-op. store, leaving this position shortly before his enlistment. Champion Swimmer Taking a very prominent part in the establishment of the Kaikohe Swimming Club, Ted proved a willing worker and a thorough, energetic secretary. He won several club championships and was regarded as among the best swimmers in the Bay of Islands. A prominent club official, when informed last evening of Ted’s passing, stated that he had proved a wonderful stimulant to the younger members of the club. At all times he had been ready and eager to help fellow members, youngsters especially relying on his joviality and willing advice. His sportsmanlike qualities and perpetual joviality were an inspiration to others. Previous Accident Leaving New Zealand shortly after (he outbreak of hostilities, Ted served in Greece, escaping unscathed, only to have an ankle broken in Egypt as a result of a motor accident. He was only recently passed as fit for the front line again, but apparently before he could return to his unit he was involved in another accident, which was responsible for his untimely death. His parents and sister yesterday received from far and near a large number of messages of sympathy in their loss, a loss which the people of Kaikohe closely share.
