Nationalists Win Both By-Elections

[Special to "Northern Advocate"] MORRINSVILLE. This Day. The by-election for the Ilauraki seat in the House of Representatives, held on Saturday, resulted: Mr. A. S. Sutherland (National), 3639.

Mr. H. T. Head (Independent), 1043. Informal. 32. Majority for Sutherland, 2596. The by-election was caused through the death in action of Lieut.-Col. J. M. Allen, who won the seat at the 1938 general election from Mr. R, Coulter, then the sitting Labour member. The majority for Lieut.-Col. Allen was 1188. Total votes cast in 1938 were 9491. against 4714 on Saturday Temuka Count The by-election for the Temuka scat also resulted in the National Party’s candidate being successful. The preliminary count was: Mr. J. Acland (National). 4142. Mr. D. C. Davie (Independent), 1516. Majority for Acland, 2626. In 1938 Mr. T. D. Burnett, whose death caused the vacancy, defeated Mr. J. A. Kearton (Labour) by votes to 4245. The Labour Party did not contest either seat ori Saturday.
