Emergency Justifies Vehicle Impressment
[Per Press Association.—Copyright] WELLINGTON, This Day,
“The state of emergency in which New Zealand is situated justifies immediate action in the impressment of .motor vehicles for the army,” stated the Minister for National Service (Mr Semple) yesterday. Certain persons who had received impressment notices had contended that these defence preparations were unwarranted, but they were ignoring the lessons of the last fortnight. The army was going to get vehicles irrespective of individual viewpoints or private interests.
“1 gave an undertaking that vehicles would not be impressed merely for training or manoeuvres,” said Mr Semple. “I said vehicles would be impressed only in extreme emergency. That occasion has now arrived. I appealed to vehicles owners who have received impressment notices to consider first and foremost the country's interests.”
