Immediate Safety Measures By E.P.S.
[Special to “Northern .Advocate”!
AUCKLAND, This Day. “The Emergency Precautions Service is being placed on a war footing,” said the Mayor (Mr. Allum), on his return from Wellington today, after a conference with the Prime Minister, which was attended by mayors from every part of New Zealand. “The position is one of unparalleled gravity,” he added. “The public can be assured, however, that steps are being taken immediately to provide the maximum safety for the public and for their property as well.”
Mr- Allum, who is chief warden in the Auckland district, under the E.P.S.. announced that a series of conferences had been arranged to consider what precautions were to be taken. The first conference was held this afternoon and was attended by representatives of local bodies.
It dealt specifically with proposals for the construction of slit trenches as a means of protection.
Other conferences of E.P.S. personnel will follow. The public will be informed of the decisions made at the earliest moment.
