No Subsidised Pay For Council Men In Fighting Forces

[Special to “Northern Advocate’ ] KAITAIA, This Day. The Mangonui County Council does not favour subsidising the military pay of employees in the armed forces. This was made clear in discussion on a letter received by the council from the Gray County Council asking its policy on this matter. “I do not see how the council can get far in this matter. I should hardly be in favour of making any alteration in a man’s military pay,” commented Cr. L. J. Matthews. Majority Not Subsidised “The majority of men overseas get only their military pay,” said Cr. J. W. Hoskin. “Council employees serving with the forces have their jobs kept open for them, and we have difficulty in arranging substitutes,” remarked the chairman (Mr. C, J. E. Barriball). Cr. I. J. Berghan: It is a matter that should be put before the Government. I feel that men overseas should be put in a better position than the men staying at home. : Cr. A. D. L. Shaw: Government departments are not subsidising their employees who go on active service and we should not give a lead in the matter. It was decided to take no action.
