Blarney Explains Presence At Race Meeting
MELBOURNE, November 17. Following his recent remarks about the “carnival spirit in Australia,” the Commander-in-Chief of the Australian Imperial Force (General Sir T. Blarney) today was asked concerning his presence at the Williamstown Cup meeting on Saturday. His reply was: “I received an invitation to attend the races and had no hesitation in accepting it. “Let me say that I am not in favour of killing all forms of enjoyment. I see no reason why the older men cannot carry on here, but it seems decidedly out of place to see crowds of young men attending sports meetings and watching other young men play. There are sterner things for them to do. “On the other hand, it would be deplorable if racing were extinguished in this or any other British community.”
