Supplied Liquor To Native; Fined
Supplying liquor to a native, a similar charge to that on which he had been fined last year, was admitted by Frederick Davies in the Whangarei Court this morning, and he was fined £5 with costs. Sergeant R. E. McGettigan said that with a native named William Reni. Davies had gone into a hotel. Reni had given him money to buy beer and he had left with four bottles, two of which he had given to the Maori. Constable Davis had seen them and Reni had admitted to him that he owned the liquor. Davies had been before the court on a similar charge a year ago. Took Own Risk “I gave him his beer and told him lie could take his own risk,” Davies told the magistrate (Mr. Raymond Ferner). The magistrate: Yes. and you took your risk. You have been heavily fined before for this offence. Reni did not appear to answer a charge of aiding, assisting, counselling or procuring the commission of the offence of supplying iiquor to him, a native, in a proclaimed area, for consumption off licensed premises. Constable Davis gave evidence that he had followed Reni who had said the beer was Davies’, but later admitted that it was his. A fine of £ 2/10/- with costs was imposed.
