Kaipara Flats Has Combined Pig, Jersey Demonstration
| The fine points of a pig, both j internal and external, were demon- | strated in a practical way to 50 farm- ! ers attending a combined field day j held at Kaipara Flats on Thursday, j Organisers were the Northland'District Pig Council and the Rodney Jersey Club, an executive member of both bodies (Mr. Henderson) making his property available. The supervisor of the Northland District Pig Council (Mr. H. Preston) used a Large White sow, specially sent by Mr. H. E. Johnson, to show the fine points of a pig on the hoof. Alive And Dead Judge at former Northland Bacon Pig Championships and supervising grader of the Meat Board (Mr. Frank Merritt) also showed how it was possible to evaluate j carcase quality while the pig was still j alive. Later it was killed and cut up. Measur- , od under the calipers and judged on the [ Smith field system it scored 93 points out of a possible 120. Mr. Merritt saying that the carcase, almost faultless otherwise, was overfat. A guessing competition on the weight of the pig was won by the chairman of the Jersey Club (Mr. Terry). Milking Capacity First A fine Jersey cow from Mr. Henderson’s herd was used for demonstration purposes by the past president of the Whangarei Jersey Club (Mr. J. Stevens). Not appearance but milking capacity was most important in assessing the value of a cow Mr. Stevens emphasised. Sometimes a cow which was plainer in looks was a better producer than one of show tvpe The stock inspector from * Helensville showed the procedure followed in examining for disease.
