Diet Speeches May Be Conciliatory
NEW YORK, Nov. 14. The “New York Times” correspondent at Tokio says the speeches to be delivered by the Prime Minister (General Tojo) and the Foreign Minister (General Togo) at the opening of the extraordinary session of the Diet tomorrow have been approved by the Cabinet. The Domei News Agency says the speeches are designed to stir the people to full co-operation with the Government. An impression prevails that the speeches will be conciliatory in order to avoid prejudicing Mr. Kurusu’s conversations in Washington. The Diet is to be asked to sanction increased military expenditure amounting to about £224,000,000, with about £30,000,000 on general account. Goodwill to Australia The Australian Minister to Tokio (Sir John Latham) said yesterday that it was possible that wiser counsels would prevail in Japan. There was a real measure of goodwill towards Australia, and many of the Japanese were not anxious to run the grave risk of further warlike adventures.
