Increases Penally For Foul Riding
[Per Press Association.—Copvrightl WELLINGTON, This Day. The judges of the New Zealand Racing Conference, on the appeal of the I 1 apprentice jockey. E. V. Dye, against the decision of the Wanganui District Committee in supporting the decision of the judicial committee of the Wavorley Racing Club in suspending his license for six months, have given the following judgment.— "In hearing this appeal we have had before us reports of the previous proceedings. We have heard further evidence tendered on behalf of the appellant and we have reheard the evidence of T. W. Read, who immediately after j the race complained to the deputy j stipendiary steward. We have also heard counsel for appellant. Penalty Insufficient "We consider that the evidence given by Read can be relied on fully, and that evidence given, especially by Dye. that Ring Chief stumbled three times during the race, is not borne cut and that fact justifies us in disregarding his evidence. "We accept, therefore, as being true, the evidence of Read as to Dye’s foul riding. We consider the judicial committee of the Waverley Racing Club was fully justified in its finding and that the Wanganui District Committee erred in finding the charge of foul riding not proved. "However, we are of the opinion that the penalty imposed b.v the Waverley Judicial Committee and confirmed on the lesser charge was, in view of the seriousness of the offences, inadequate. We therefore dismiss the appeal and order that the term of suspension be increased from six months to 12 months from October 27. Appellant’s deposit is forfeited.”
W.W.S.A. Marching Parade The Thursday night marching parade of the W.W.S.A. was a very popular one. Over 100 girls took part in the drill under the instruction of Sergeant-Major E. Palmer. Groups were formed for the forthcoming rally in Rugby Park and the members paraded in their platoons in which they will march for competition. Mr. Higgins, joint organiser, was present and secured entries for the sports groups of eight. Judging by the number of arrangements for private practice there should be some smartening up before next week is over.
