National Savings At Maungaturoto

To further the National Savings campaign in Maungaturoto a wellattended meeting was held in the Foresters’ Hall. Mr W. Collins was elected chairman for the evening, and those present were subsequently elected to form a committee en bloc. Th newly-appointed postmaster at Maungaturoto (Mr V. P. Scaletti) briefly outlined the facts in connection with the National Savings Campaign and then read extracts from the general information supplied to the Dominion by the Director-General of the Post and Telegi’aph Department. He stressed the point that national savings was a national duty and hoped the Maungaturoto people would realise their liability in this war effort and that there would be a 100 per cent, all-in effort for this campaign. £3l Weekly Mr Scarletti mentioned that the Maungaturoto district was required to contribute £3l weekly by way of National Savings deposits, and to do this it would require every household to do its bit, and not only to take out a National Savings account, but also to endeavour to make regular weekly deposits. Special emphasis was placed on the necessity for weekly deposits which were required to meet Maungaturoto’s allotted weekly contribution.

The public of Maungaturoto would know how the weekly National Savings was progressing by means of a money-ball, which would be hung from the post office flag pole, and the money-ball would be raised daily in proportion to the daily deposits. Money-Ball In the event of the £3l or more being deposited before the end of the week, tiie ball would be immediately lowered, and a flag would be flown from the mast-head to show that the weekly contribution had been achieved. In the event of the weekly amount of £3l being over-subscribed, the surplus would be credited up to 50 per cent to the next week’s quota. A suitable money-ball was promised by Mr. T. H. Whitwell, and material for the making of a flag was promised by Mr. E. A. Vyle. Making of Flag It was suggested that the Women's War Auxiliary be approached in an endeavour to have a suitable flag made. The lettering in the flag will carry the “V” victory sign. All present agreed to do their utmost for the war effort, and it was hoped that when the committee next met on November 17 that a marked improvement in the number of the depositors would be shown. Latest inquiries from the post office reveal that the members of the committee have been busy and that several new accounts have already been* onened.
