Blarney Causes Consternate By Discarding Old War Tie
(Received 10.30 a.m.) SYDNEY, November 13. 'THE GENERAL OFFICER COMMANDING THE A.I.F. IN THE MIDDLE EAST (GENERAL SIR THOMAS BLAMEY) STEPPED FROM THE QANTAS FLYING-BOAT WHICH BROUGHT HIM TO SYDNEY DRESSED IN SHORTS, HIS TOP TUNIC BUTTONS UNDONE AND WITHOUT COLLAR AND TIE. Ills A.D.C., Captain Carlyon, was also shirtless, tieless and with tunic undone. Their appearance contrasted sharply with that of the Chief of the General Staff (Lieut.-General Sturdee), Major-General H. W. Wynter and Lieut.-General C. G. N. Miles, who met them in full dress uniform. The regimental undress of General Blarney and Captain Carlyon caused consternation in military circles. “DO AS I SAY. . Only a few weeks ago the army launched a campaign against slovenly dress. Soldiers were warned against ‘appearing with unbuttoned tunics, undone pockets or collars incorrectly fastened. One military officer said: “Whatever the custom in the tropics, certain standards of dress have been deckled upon for Australia, and it has become a matter of discipline that they should be maintained.”
