Whangarei, Mareretu Soldiers Safe
Mr and Mrs H. A. Munn, of Whangarei, yesterday experienced a thrill of joy when they received a communication from their son, Reg., who left New- Zealand with the ambulance section of the N.Z.E.F., and who has
been posted as missing, that he was in a hospital transit camp in Crete. The communication was dated July 29, and stated that the writer, who was fit and well, was a prisoner pf war. Though the weather was hot, he was able to have three or four swims a day, and there was a plentiful supply of fruit, cucumbers, tomatoes and grapes. Pte. K. Herbert Advice has been received by Mrs M. Burke, of Mareretu, that Private Henry Herbert, who enlisted from Mareretu and who was recently reported missing believed killed, is in good health, and a prisoner of war in
Germany. The information was transmitted per medium of a postcard received from Geneva through the Red Cross organisation. The card was signed by Pte. Herbert, and said he was in good health and would write when his permanent address had been fixed. Private Herbert went overseas with the Second Echelon and is well-known in the North.
By cable from his sister-in-law in England, Mr. A. Hilton, of Maunu Road, received the glad tidings today that his eldest son, Pte. George Albert
Hilton, is unhurt as a prisoner of war in Sfalag VIII, Germany. Evidently Pte. Hilton, who has been missing since the Crete campaign, wrote to his relative in the Homeland, realising that a letter would reach her before it arrived in New Zealand.
