Two Labour Stalwarts For Upper House

[Special to “Northern Advocate”] WELLINGTON, This Day. The appointment to the Legislative Council of Messrs. Janies Cumming and Richard Eddy has been announced by the acting-Prime Minister (Mr. Nash). Members reappointed are the Hons. T. F. O'Byrne, W. Perry, V. A. Ward and Lieut.-Colonel F. Waite, D.S.O. Richard Eddy Mr Eddy has been prominently associated with the Labour movement in New Zealand for over 40 years. His youth was spent on a farm and in 1912 he became an organiser for the New Zealand Workers’ Union, of which he became president. Mr. Eddy is also a vice-president of the Federation of j Labour and a member of the national executive of the Labour Party. He is also a member of the War Council. James Cumming Mr. Cumming has been associated with the Labour movement over a long period. He has had considerable experience as a miner on the West Coast and in the Waikato. He was chairman of the North Island Miners’ District Council. He came to Petone in 1920, subsequently working on the waterfront, and was president of the Wellington Waterside Workers’ Union for two years. He has been a member of the Petone Borough Council for 11 years. He is president of the Hutt Labour Representation Committee, and secretary of the Petone branch of the Labour Party.
