Co-operative Dairy Scheme In Auckland Area

j With the objective of special advantages to none and advantages to all, a [conference had been held at Hamilton j and later at Whangarei on the proposal to form a co-operative dairy company in the Auckland province for the purpose of selling and distributing butter in the Auckland provincial district, Mr. E. S. Tremaine, of Whangarei, reported to the Northland Dairy Association at its annual conference in Whangarei today. The principle of the co-operative marketing scheme for this purpose had been approved unanimously and I the following committee had been appointed, Mr. Tremaine continued— Messrs. E. G. Appleton (Northern Wairoa), E. S. Tremaine (Whangarei), R. Courtney (Te Aroha), J. L. Faulkner (Morrinsville), A. J. Sinclair (Te Awamutu), W. A. McCracken (Rangitaiki Plains), J. R. Sinclair (Opotiki), and Messrs. W. Marshall, W. E. Hale, J. T. Young and C. J. Parlane, of the New Zealand Co-op. Dairy Co. Ltd.. with Mr. A. J. Murdoch, of the New Zealand Dairy Board, as a member ex officio.

Company Aim

The work of that committee had been wide and varied, said Mr. Tremaine.

The objective was to form a company entitled Auckland Co-operativ« Dairies Ltd. and to operate in the territory in the Auckland province serviced by dairy companies shipping through the port of Auckland, all cooperative butter companies in the Auckland province being eligible for membership. The capital of the company was 15,000 shares of £1 each to be subscribed for by dairy companies on a tonnage basis of one share per seven tons of output. Seven directors were provided for, three to be elected by the New Zealand Dairy Company, two by Northland, one by South Auckland and one by Bay of Plenty, headquarters to be at Auckland.

Butter Output

Forty dairy factories operating in the area represented two-thirds of the output of butter, made up of New Zealand Dairy Company 50,566 tons output. Northland 24.499 tons, South Auckland 17,348 tons, Bay of Plenty 13,645 tons. Local sales in the City of Auckland were New Zealand Dairy Company 2474 tons, Northland 376 tons. Opotiki 692 tons, Te Aroha 180 tons. Totals in Auckland included ships' stores of approximately 5000 tons annually. All dairy companies patting butter under the proposed new scheme would retain the full patting allowance of 1/4 per lb. provided in the Butter Marketing Regulations 1937. Suppliers’ butter would not be included in the scheme unless used for retail purposes. The New Zealand Dairy Company would have 50 per cent, patting of the Auckland City trade, where it now claims to have 60 per cent.
